JDRF ONE WALK ALLENTOWN

As some of you may know, I’m a Type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed just over three years ago and it was and continues to be something that affects me on a daily basis. Simply put, type 1 diabetes means my pancreas no longer works as it should and has stopped producing insulin to control blood-sugar levels. As such, I have to test my blood sugar levels 4-6 times daily through finger pricks and give myself roughly four insulin injections each day (before each meal and before bed). While insulin can help manage type 1 diabetes, there is no known cure nor do scientists know what causes type 1 diabetes in the roughly 1.25 million Americans currently living with this disease.

Which is why this next part is so important. On Sunday, October 7, I’ll be participating in the JDRF One Walk Allentown in an effort to raise money for type 1 diabetes research. JDRF is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to type 1 diabetes research and advocacy and is an organization I’ve been fortunate enough to work with for nearly three years now. I first participated in the One Walk Brooklyn in 2016 where we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and was lucky enough last year to help coordinate a walk in Allentown that began and ended at PPL Center, the home of my former employer - the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

This year, we will once again be walking in downtown Allentown and under the team name Broad Street Bolus, which is both an ode to my favorite hockey team and to meal-time insulin injections. My family walked alongside me last year and will be doing so again this time around and I truthfully can’t thank them enough for all the help, support and love they’ve provided over the past three years. There are currently no days off from type 1 diabetes but hopefully through fundraising and research, we can hope to find such a day.
