The Lehigh volleyball team enjoyed playing spoiler over the weekend. It started Friday night when they welcomed in rival Lafayette, who was riding a 10-match win streak. The Mountain Hawks had to play from behind in that one, dropping the first and third sets – the women were forced into a must-win situation for the first time this year. It was a match that went back and forth and could have gone either way, but in the end defense was the difference. Lehigh’s defensive effort combined for 19 team blocks to Lafayette’s four. The Mountain Hawks have now won 8 straight matches over the Leopards dating back to 2015.
If there was any concern about a let down, it didn't show on Saturday. In Lewisburg, Pa. facing Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks were able to take set 1 from the Bison who were also coming in with a 10-match win streak. The Mountain Hawks were certainly tested but prevailed thanks to a record-setting day from junior outside hitter Sabrina Lancaster. Lancaster finished with an unbelievable performance, making it three in a row. She finished the match with 19 kills and 20 digs, another career-best after registering 19 against Lafayette on Friday. The double-double was her fourth of the season after registering at least 16 kills in back-to-back-to-back matches.
With the win, the Mountain Hawks improved to 9-7 overall, but more importantly 2-0 in Patriot League play. It's the first time since 2017 that the Hawks have opened league play with back-to-back victories. These are two big wins for Lehigh as the schedule will not be getting any easier. The women will visit defending regular season champion American next Friday, before facing defending tournament champion Navy on Saturday at noon from Annapolis.
