There were two main differences from the first time the Parkland and Emmaus boys soccer teams met on the field: energy and health. Monday night, the Parkland boys came out with an intensity that Emmaus couldn't match, and it resulted in a 2-0 victory.
Let’s go back to the genesis of this one. The Green Hornets took the first match 2-1 back on September 4 in OT. The Trojans were not 100% in that outing and they lacked energy. This game had a little more riding on the outcome as the two would be battling for first place in the division. The Green Hornets are still dealing with injuries, and yes of course that plays a role, but the Trojans were not messing around. Even the bench was a factor. The “benchergy” (which is clearly not a word, but one that Parkland uses) really boosted the guys on the field. They were loud and they never sat. As for the players on the field, the Trojans came out firing nearly 5 minutes in. Two really great opportunities were created but Chris Buck made some great saves. It wasn’t until the direct kick from Alex Wilsterman that Parkland got on the board. With 26:27 in the half Wilsterman got off a shot so perfect it would probably be hard to do again. The ball went around the defensive wall and snuck in the right side between Buck and the post. Despite the lack of shots, the Green Hornets nearly tied the game with 13:20 on the clock. Eric Johnson let the ball fly from past the 25 that bounced off the cross bar. The score remained 1-0 at the half.
The second half was more evenly played. The Green Hornets had more opportunities, but nothing Victor Baran and the Trojans defense couldn’t handle. In the end, the Trojans would seal the deal after a handball in the box. Wilsterman would take the PK and go low and left for his second goal of the game. Parkland would win the game 2-0 and take 1st place in the division.
The Green Hornets have now dropped two straight games. The Trojans are now 6-1 in the division with just three games remaining in the regular season. Expect to see another matchup between these two in the postseason.
