The Lehigh women's basketball team hosted its annual Education Day game last Tuesday morning at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks never trailed as they rolled over the Monmouth Hawks 63-48 to improve to 3-0. Lehigh is now 7-3 in Education Day games.
Thousands of area school kids were able to attend the game and they had a great time as always. It was a very enthusiastic crowd. Every time the clock got to ten seconds, there was a loud countdown to zero. The Lehigh athletics staff did an awesome job by tossing t-shirts and mini basketballs into the crowd at almost every time-out. I have a hard time believing that many kids went home empty handed. There were souvenirs flying in every direction.
Service Electric again televised the 11 A.M. tip-off. One of the best shots our fantastic crew got had nothing to do with the action on the floor. When we came back from commercial break at halftime, you saw many of the youngsters digging into their lunches. It was halftime...and lunchtime!! I really got a kick out of that.
Kudos to the folks at Lehigh, especially Head Coach Sue Troyan and her players, for giving our area students a chance to set foot on a college campus to watch some basketball. The players really seem to enjoy themselves before, during and after the game. The kids certainly bring a lot of energy to the building. I think it's a fantastic idea and I hope the tradition continues at Stabler Arena for a long time.
