BULLDOGS WON'T SETTLE

Normally when a basketball team wins by 28 points they walk away pleased. Normally. But, the DeSales Women’s basketball team is anything but normal. Year in and year out, head coach Fred Richter has them as top contenders, and this season is no different. The Bulldogs have been destroying opponents in large part to their aggressive defense, which translates to easy buckets. The team did suffer their first loss on Monday night to #8 Scranton and according to Richter, they did not respond well last night.

By looking at the stats, many would wonder what he is talking about. After all the Bulldogs led 15-2 in the first quarter. They never trailed after that, and led by 32 at one point. The team also forced 22 steals and had 8 blocks. But still, they heard about the fact that they played down to Gwynned Mercy’s level last night. Had I not been there, I would agree with all of you reading this. What more could Coach Richter want? But, having seen them play last night and once before, I understand what he wants from them. After the game, he told me he wants this team to get better after every game, last night they did not. His team is so talented that even though they won by 28 points they could have won by 40+. It was sloppy, it was slow but they got the job done. Not to make excuses for them, but the team was also without their star player and recent 1,000-point scorer Leandra Sterner. On a positive, several underclassmen stepped up.

Morgan Biremlin carried the team last night, with a game-high 21 points. She also had 6 assists, and 5 steals. The Bulldogs have one more game before opening up league play on December 5th.
