The Bethlehem Catholic girls basketball team was one of the favorites among Lehigh Valley teams to go deep in the PIAA tournament, maybe even repeat as 4A State Champions. Bonner-Prendergast had the last word on that happening, ending the Golden Hawks season 40-38 in the 2nd round at Spring-Ford High School on March 14th. Prendie head coach, Tom Stewart, a wily veteran on his 25th season at BP, employed a 3-2 zone that effectively limited Beca’s ability to work the ball inside. Bonner-Prendergast won despite not having the services of their play-maker Nyah Garrison. The Pandas won on two free throws with seconds left. Two years ago Becahi was the favorite against Conrad Weiser in the 2nd round but lost in that round too.
The Allen girls confounded conventional wisdom as the only EPC girls team making it to the quarterfinals. This is a team that didn’t even qualify for the EPC tournament, yet those who did were gone after the 2nd round. Allen hadn't gone that far since the 2008 season. They beat Spring-Ford in the 1st round and beat District 3 champion Central Dauphin in round two. This is one team that was certainly living the cliche “playing with house money” before losing to 60-40 to Central Bucks South in their bid to reach the semifinals. Not bad for the 4th team out of District 11 in 6A.
