The Moravian College women’s lacrosse team has a lot to live up to this year. Coming in off their best season in program history in 2017, thanks to a postseason appearance, which included a trip to the ECAC Division III Tournament First Round. Now I know any coach will tell you that is in the past and I’m sure third-year head coach Kristen Nicholson is no different, however if I was a betting women (which I’m not) I’d say pretty confidently that she has to be excited for what the future holds.

Nicholson, who returned her top seven scorers from a season ago, has her team off and running with a 5-1 overall record, and 1-0 conference record. One of those athletes is junior midfielder/attack Jill Picciuto, who has already set school career records in assists and points prior to the 2018-year. The Greyhounds also brought back both of their goalkeepers, and so far this year the defense has been playing just as well as the offense, only allowing the other team to score in the double-digits in 2 of their 6 games. Not to mention, the defense helped make history again in the Greyhounds last outing, shutting out Juniata 19-0. It was the team’s first shutout in program history.

I understand the Greyhounds, who were picked 6th in the Landmark Conference preseason poll, still have a long way to go; but it’s safe to say they are off to a good start and the future looks bright for this talented squad.

Moravian will take a break from conference play traveling to rival Desales in their next outing on Wednesday and then they are right back at it travelling to Susquehanna University on Friday. It will be exciting to see what this team can accomplish this year.
