What a unique Father’s Day this past weekend for myself and a lot of other dad’s in the Lehigh Valley. Partnering with the Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, SteelStacks presented their 1st Annual SteelStacks Grand Prix. A day long event held in the south side of Bethlehem.
Who knew how the day long event would come off, with practice slated for 11:00AM and preliminary heats going off at noon, the feature to follow at 3pm. Smooth and without incident is the best way to describe it. There was 33 “teams” made up of local business’s that put together a roster of 5 to compete, with the three heats made up of 11 of those teams. The top 4 from each heat would race against each other in the feature event. Each race was 45 minutes long, and each team had to change drivers 4 times.
The best part of the day for me was, at about 10:15AM, when I found out that I would be one of the drivers for the Service Electric team. I had practiced on the track on Thursday, but going out there with 10 other karts, this would be way better. I will talk about this in another blog, because honestly, it was the highlight of the day.
The event however, a huge success with most teams really spending a lot of time recruiting the right drivers, and then practicing a few of the key components needed, like driver changes, in order to place high in the feature. The good news. They will be back for another race day at SteelStacks in 2018.
SteelStacks COO Curt Mosel passed along the good news that next year they would like to make it a two day event, with a complete open to the public race day on Sunday, hopefully Fathers Day, then have the corporate race on Monday. I’m in for sure. What a great way to spend a Sunday under the sun, watching and competing with some really good racers. Stay tuned for more on this event, and just how special it was.
