The FIL (Federation of International Lacrosse) World Lacrosse Championships are officially underway! A few weeks ago I did a story highlighting two local lacrosse players who were heading to Natanya, Isreal to compete on Puerto Rico’s first ever national lacrosse team.
Those two athletes are Desi and Lou Gonzalez who had their first game of the tournament on Friday. Puerto Rico opened play against Wales and had quite the debut in the world games. Right from the start they dominated at the faceoff X and just about everywhere else on the field holding Wales scoreless until about 25 minutes into the game.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico was drilling them into the net with five straight goals, the first, assisted by the Lehigh Valleys own Desi Gonzalez, who also happens to be the Emmaus boys lacrosse head coach.
Desi ended up with two assists and his bother Lou with one in Puerto Ricos demolishing 16 to four win over Wales. Their team will be back in action on Saturday morning at 11:15 am when they take on Bermuda, and according to Desi, this should be a little bit closer of a match up.
Games are being broadcast on ESPN+ (some on ESPN2 and ESPNU) if you want to tune in and support team Puerto Rico in their quest for world lacrosse domination!
