When you’re a college athlete, on top of performing in the classroom as well as in your sport it’s typically expected of you to do community service. There were several different ways to volunteer. I specifically remember volunteering for the Special Olympics, which our college held each year; as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters. Each week a local school would bring a group of kids in the program to Widener and we would spend an hour with them.  Yes, this was community service but it was also so much more.

You may be wondering why I am blogging about this now. Well I recently read an article on the Moravian College website stating that nearly 450 student athletes completed 3,127 hours of community service this past school year.  That is very impressive. It’s so nice to see these student athletes who already have so much on their plate taking time out of their busy schedules to give back. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, however. Community service has been a staple at Moravian for a very long time. The Greyhounds take part in several community projects as well as contributing to on-campus events.
