If you're a local sports fan I'm sure you've heard by now that Moravian Academy outlasted Bangor in a thrilling 66-65 basketball contest this past Saturday afternoon. I had the privilege of being part of our exclusive broadcast of this game on Service Electric and suffice it to say, it was an instant classic.
>From Jordan Holmqvist's 16 points for Moravian in the opening quarter to Ben Holland's 16 in the final frame for Bangor and from Holland's go-ahead 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining to Pete Chiaradia's game-winning tip-in as time expired, it was the kind of game where truly neither team deserved to lose. Holland poured in a game-high 32 points with Holmqvist (31 points) leading the way for the Lions (who are now a perfect 9-0). Junior forward Nate Owens chipped in another 10 points for the Slaters who moved to 8-2 overall on the year in seeing their 55-game Colonial League winning streak come to an end. Meanwhile, Chiaradia and sophomore guard Abel Saft each added nine points for Moravian Academy.
Both teams should be incredibly proud of their resiliency, execution, determination and competitiveness displayed in Saturday's showdown. They battled for every loose ball, answered a big shot at one shot with a big shot on the other and not once did it ever feel like one team had put the other away. Both Steve Gabryluk (Moravian Academy) and Bron Holland (Bangor) have a lot to be excited about with their respective teams and the rematch between the Colonial League powers at Bangor on January 29 will be a can't-miss contest.
