Anyone who follows wrestling, especially the Colonial League, knows that year in and year out head coach Chad Shirk has his Saucon Valley team in tip top shape. Like any coach, Shirk believes there is always room for improvement, but the rest of the league may have a different opinion. The Panthers are just one win away from completing their 6th consecutive unbeaten Colonial League season (so far that is 64 straight dual meets vs. league opponents). The final dual meet comes at Palisades tomorrow who the Panthers should handle pretty easily. I mean the 5x defending champs made light work of an undefeated Northwestern team last night and the Pirates have a few more losses under their belt. So how does Shirk do it? That is something the humble coach would probably never take credit for (he does hate being interviewed after all) and I have to say I’ve been very impressed with how down to earth his wrestlers continue to be despite being 17-0 on the year.
It was a long night for the Panthers as they had to wrestle Northern Lehigh before facing the Tigers, due to earlier season postponements, but you would have never known. Saucon opened with 4 straight victories to build a 16-0 team lead, something the Tigers could not bounce back from and 47-22 would be the final.
The wins guaranteed Saucon the top seed for the Colonial League tournament, which begins on Monday at Catasauqua. From what I have seen over the last two weeks, the Panthers should have no issues bringing home another trophy.
