If you haven’t had the opportunity to see the DeSales Women’s basketball team in action, then I highly recommend you take in one of their games before the season ends. The Bulldogs, who have just one regular season home game remaining, are having one of their best seasons to date. The #13/16 squad has been making the history books all year, and they're just one win away from adding another accolade to their resume. Over the weekend, the Bulldogs won their 16th straight game, improving to 21-2 on the season, and a perfect 12-0 in the conference. They did it with a convincing 66-45 win over Misericordia, holding the Cougars to just 20.7 percent shooting.
The 16th straight overall victory for the Bulldogs ties the all-time record set during the end of the 2002 season and start of 2003. The victory also clinches the MAC Freedom Regular Season Championship and the #1 seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament in two weeks. I've been saying all year what a great head coach Fred Richter is, and right now we're seeing why. This is the most wins under him since the 2009 season when DSU won 23 games. Knowing Fred, he would never take the credit, but he is a heck of a coach.
The Bulldogs will have to break the record on the road when they travel to Eastern University on Tuesday. They return home for the final game of the regular season on Saturday, which is where they will stay the entire postseason. Earning the number 1 spot has awarded them with home-court advantage for the playoffs, which begin on February 20.
Here’s hoping this is the year they win it all!
