THIRD TIME'S A CHARM FOR FREEDOM GIRLS

When it comes to any playoffs it really depends on the luck of the draw. For the top seeded Easton girl’s basketball team, well they probably felt that the cards did not fall in their favor. The 20-2 Red Rovers would have to face the eighth seed of the tournament.  Sounds like a walk in the park, right? Wrong. It just so happens that the 8 seed would be the Freedom Patriots. A team the Red Rovers barely beat twice in the regular season, including just 4 nights prior when they won 56-51 to clinch the EPC East. So, the Patriots were thrilled to have another opportunity. One they would be sure to capitalize on. The Patriots came in with a bitter taste in their mouth, and brought a different game plan, one that put an emphasis on the third quarter. In the prior two games the difference came in the third quarter, said head coach Dean Reiman. The first half was evenly played as it was again last night, but this time the Patriots went bucket for bucket with the Red Rovers in the third only trailing 38-37. That was the theme all night really. Back and forth play, with no team ever leading by more then 5.

So what was the difference of the night? Probably the big 3-point shot made by senior Hailey Silfies with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter. That would put Freedom up 48-47; combine that with clutch free throws down the stretch and tough defense and the Patriots pull out the upset 55-51. It was senior Kyra Jefferson who really fueled the Patriots offense the entire game though. She took matters into her own hands literally in the second quarter scoring all 10 of the Patriots points. She would finish with 23 points.

The Patriots will now go up against (5) Central Catholic on Wednesday in the EPC semi-finals. A team they have not faced this season, however Reiman knows when you go up against a Mike Kopp team that they are always going to play tough defense. I, personally, haven’t seen the Vikettes yet this season, however I have now seen the Patriots twice and although they are the 8 seed, they do not play like the underdog. Don’t count the Patriots out of this tournament.
