People often ask me what sport is my favorite to broadcast. I always say that I don't really have a favorite. I enjoy all of the sports I get to call. But I have to admit that there is something magical for me when I hear the words "pitchers and catchers report." Spring training is a great time of the year.
Everyone is a truly a contender this time of year, even the Phillies. There sure is a lot of optimism and confidence coming out of Clearwater right now. I'm not sure I'm ready to buy that at this point. The team certainly has a lot of questions to answer but that is what the spring is all about. Players get the chance to prove themselves and teams figure out where they may still need help. The Phils' youth movement should be in full force in 2018. Can they compete or do they need more seasoning is a big question to be answered.
If you are a baseball fan but you've never headed south for spring training, I would highly encourage it. There are several teams that train close to Clearwater. The Blue Jays are in neighboring Dunedin. The Yankees are in Tampa. And there are several teams that set up camp within a relatively short drive of Clearwater.
It doesn't have to be all baseball either. You have Clearwater Beach and Busch Gardens. Orlando is an easy drive across Interstate 4. I've heard there might be a few golf courses in the area too. And if you want it to be all baseball, that is doable. Plenty of big league games to catch plus the minor leaguye complexes are always buzzing with activity once the calendar turns to March.
Time to Play Ball!!
