“Tradition never graduates.” That's the mindset of the Muhlenberg women’s basketball team. And so far, they are living up to that motto. Despite graduating four starters (3 all-stars), the Mules sit at 8-0 on the year, 5-0 in the conference, with one of those victories coming on the road at Haverford. Anyone who has been following the Mules over the past few years knows that's a big win for the team. The Mules and Fords have combined for four Centennial Conference championships over the past five years and both were in the top 10 in Division III in scoring defense entering the contest.
The Mules have won 10 CC titles, more than twice as many as any other team in the league, including eight in the last 13 years. Once again the mules will be relying on depth and athleticism (it seems like that is the case every year!) But defense wins championships and at the moment the Mules have the stingiest in NCAA women’s basketball. Muhlenberg entered their last game on December 8th, leading more than 1,000 schools in the three NCAA divisions in scoring defense. The Mules were allowing 41.1 points per game, and they lowered that average to 40.1 after.
The women take a break from conference play to go up against local rivals Moravian on Saturday, and Desales on Tuesday at 6:00pm (which will be broadcasted on TV2.) Desales defeated the Greyhounds easily earlier this season – which means the Tuesday night game should be quite entertaining!
