With the winter sports season getting underway, we've been trying to cover as many teams as possible; and it has been really nice hearing the feedback from coaches and players with their appreciation. Last night was no different. I headed to Catasauqua to report on the girl’s basketball team, as they welcomed in Pen Argyl. On paper, it seemed like this would be an easy win for the Green Knights, who were 2-1 coming in to the night. The Rough Riders were still searching for their first win, under first-year head coach Mark Seremula.
But that was not the case, at least for the majority of the night. In fact, Catty led for most of the first quarter, opening the game with a 7-2 run, and taking back the lead to end the quarter up 17-15. They were playing very well offensively, especially sophomore Alexis Rushatz who hit two of her six triples in the first. Although Rushatz would carry her team with a game-high 20 points – it was ultimately Pen Argyl's Maci Weber who stole the show. It started in the 3rd quarter when she hit a three ending a 6-0 run by the Rough Riders who were back on top 25-21. And it would be the 4th quarter where she scored 13 of her 17 points, allowing her team to stretch out their lead to a 50-35 final. Defense also played a key role as the Green Knights would hold Catty to just one bucket in the 2nd quarter. The defense especially shined in the 4th quarter but this did not surprise the Knights. The team knew they would rely on their defense to be successful this year.
While Southern Lehigh is still the powerhouse in the Colonial League, it was nice to get out and see a few other teams who put in just as much time and effort.
