The William Allen girl’s basketball team is looking to make a splash in the EPC this season. As the District XI 4th place finisher a year ago, the Canaries think they can be a top contender this year. After all, they were the final District XI team standing in states last year, losing in the quarterfinals. It was the first time since 2008 that the team had won a state game. The Canaries are an interesting team as they return four of their five starters, however that one graduating senior is a key loss. Kion Andrews was a 1,000-point scorer. She ran their offense and their defense, and she was their go-to player in every situation. However, that was the thing. It was Kion Andrews. This year, according to Miriam Rodriguez, they are five strong. Most of the team has been playing together since they were little and they all bring something different to the team.

Height will be a key factor for this team. They roster four girls who are at least 6 feet tall, yes they are lacking experience but height is a big part of the game especially in high school and the Canaries will look to use that to their advantage. With one of the best bigs in the area (Jakayla Wise), the team hopes to dominate the boards, and if they can do that they should be pretty good in transition.

According to Head Coach Stanley Broyles, it will take some time. Andrews is not an easy player to replace. But once the team gets on the same page, they should be pretty balanced and awfully tough to beat.
