Bethlehem Steel FC is playing some of their best soccer at the opportune time. The Philadelphia Unions USL affiliate has now won five of their last six matches after a crucial win Wednesday night over Ottawa FC. Prior to that match, Bethlehem stood at fifth place with only one point separating fifth and ninth place, so it’s a pretty tight race to say the least. Three points at home was huge though as Santi Moar earned his second brace of the season just 16 minutes apart. The 24 year-old Spaniard now leads the team in goals and has the two fastest braces on the team, his first coming within three minutes.
Now its onto another crucial game in the playoff race as Steel FC travels to Nashville for their inaugural trip to the music city. Nashville is in ninth place which is the cut off for playoffs, but that differential doesn’t mean much as there is still only a four-point difference between them and fifth place Steel.
Nashville, a team that features two former Bethlehem Steel FC players (Taylor Washington & Bolu Akinyode), has nine wins, eight draws and six losses on the season so far. Two of those draws came in the month of August sandwiching a win over Ottawa Fury FC. Their last game was on Saturday against Louisville City FC which came to an end with a scoreless draw, and means that this team has a lot more rest than Bethlehem going into Saturdays matchup. Luckily for Steel, Wednesdays game was their final regular season match to fall before a weekend, so they can look forward to longer periods of rest and recovery during the most important stretch of the season.
It will be interesting to see how Steel builds upon this confidence they have earned over the past month and if they can hang tight in this playoff race which is no doubt going to get tighter as the next few weeks unfold. Bethlehem Steel FC looks to tie the franchise record for most wins in a season when they take on Nashville on Saturday at 8:30 p.m LIVE on SE 50 and 550 HD.
