The Sights and Sounds of Musikfest 2017

It’s hard to believe this summer is soon coming to a close and fall sports are just around the corner! In fact, it seemed like fall weather just 10 days ago when Musikfest began and just like that, it was over too. The beautiful weather throughout most of Musikfest drew a record breaking crowd of close to 1.2 million festers taking in more than 500 musical performances with some of my favorites being Rubix Kube, Scythian and Flowers for Taco. I was even fortunate enough to have the opportunity to interview some of them, like New Jersey twin sisters Nalani and Sarina, who wowed me with their funk R&B rapping style.

Along with country singer and local native Erin Kelly, who’s acoustic performance at the Yuengling Lagerplatz stopped several festers in their tracks.

Let's not forget the many other performers who can now say they too have played at Musikfest, thanks to the open mic experience at the Martin Guitar Jam stage where even our very own Ron Boyer put down his Service Electric video camera for an impromptu performance that made us all proud!

Beyond the music, there were even a few busker shows along main street that drew second glances. One of my favorite acts being, the “USA Breakdancers”, a group that originated in the late 80’s in New York City, by creator Julio Santiago. The dancers, who have appeared on Broadway as well as America’s Got Talent, among many other accolades, wowed the crowd with unbelievable skill, while Santiago did the same with his old school moves that resembled ReRun’s infamous dance from the 70’s sitcom, “What’s Happening”.

Bella Magic, also hypnotized festers with her fairy tale like show, using makeup artistry and illusion to dazzle the crowd. Hailing from Toronto Canada, Bella was excited to be performing for the first time in the United States as well as Musikfest and like many other performers she too hoped to be making a return in the future.

From zip lining, to taking a stroll through a couple of 30 feet tall domes illuminated in color and sound (Architects of Air), Musikfest 2017 did not disappoint. Even the littlest of festers - my children - who I hope one day will take their children and keep our family tradition going. Isn’t that what it’s all about?!
