Although it does not feel like spring, we are supposedly two and a half weeks in. Which means spring sports are well under way. And the Philadelphia Phillies are no exception. Yesterday afternoon in front of a sold out crowd the Phils took the field for their home opener, a day many of us look forward to. I turned on the game just in time to see the opening ceremonies and the crowd was on their feet cheering with every name announced…. Well almost…
My husband had just entered the room and said, “Have they called Gabe Kapler yet?” I said “No, why?” and his response was one that left me in shock. “Oh because the fans are going to boo him.” I couldn’t believe it. I thought he was joking. Granted the team was 1-4 entering the game but the season has just started and he is the new manager. Cut the guy some slack. But nope, sure enough when Gabe Kapler’s name was announced onto the field, the boos started raining down. Apparently this wasn’t too much of a surprise to Kapler either who said, it shows the passion of the fan base. But that’s certainly a welcome he will never forget.
The boos did not stop there either. Kapler heard it again when he took pitcher Nick Pivetta out of the game after just 5.2 IP. The Phillies went on to win the home opener, for the first time since 2011, but boy is this a tough city to please!!
