THINKING OUT LOUD

April 24, 2018

I thought I would try something new for this week's blog. I'm going to hit you with a series of thoughts that just randomly pop into (and usually right out of) my head. This is something I may do periodically just to get you thinking about different things in sports-whether you agree or not. That's what make sports a lot of fun for me. There isn't always a single right answer.

And away we go...

I'm not an NFL expert by any means but if you're the Cleveland Browns, don't you take Whitehall's Saquon Barkley with the first pick in the draft Thursday night and then grab your future quarterback with the number four pick? You could have your offensive nucleus in less than an hour...Some Philadelphia fans are shocked that the rest of the country can't stand them. Sunday was Exhibit A why that is. The only good reason to throw something onto the ice is after one of your players records a hat trick. No exceptions. It looks bad because it is bad. Losing stinks and no one likes it, but sometimes you just have to suck it up and wait for next season...The Phillies are off to a very nice start. Their schedule has been very favorable thus far but piling up wins this quickly can build a lot of confidence in a team. No one expected the 1993 Phils to do anything. They got on an early roll and kept on going all the way to the World Series...Congratulations to Oakland A's pitcher Lou Trivino. He made his big league debut and picked up his first major league win on back-to-back days last week. Lou is from Green Lane in Montgomery County and went to Slippery Rock. Lou and his parents have been frequent visitors to Coca-Cola Park with Joe and MaryPat Brake...The Phantoms play their first home playoff game this Friday against Providence. The teams split the first two games in the best-of-five series last weekend in Rhode Island. Lehigh Valley was 0-3 in the post-season at home last year. Let's hope that changes!! The Phantoms won all three home games against the Bruins this year but Providence brings a much healthier team to Allentown this weekend. The Phantoms got a huge boost as a result of the Flyers loss to Pittsburgh. Travis Sanheim and Oskar Lindblom have joined the Phantoms for the Calder Cup playoffs. Service Electric has exclusive television coverage for all Phantoms home playoff games (Friday and Saturday beginning at 6:30 PM)...I have actually had the chance to catch a little of the 76ers first-round playoff series against Miami. I'm not a huge NBA fan. The Sixers look like a true threat this year in a somewhat weak Eastern Conference. I hate that tanking got them there but you can't hold that against the guys on the current team. Brett Brown can coach. The Sixers were wise to hold on to him. The players are a little cocky for a team that has won nothing but that can be a good thing. They certainly don't lack confidence. They have a lot of weapons on offense and can score in so many ways. I hope they can keep moving forward...Thanks for reading!
