One of the first fall sports to get underway is high school girls tennis. Moravian Academy and Southern Lehigh are usually the teams to beat, with both teams winning two of the last 4 League Championships. This year, Notre Dame Green Pond is making noise beating both MA and Southern Lehigh in their first round of matchups but not handily, each by a 3-2 margin. Logan Lencheski of the Crusaders swept Moravian's Taylor DeCastro and Danielle Barnes of the Spartans in both matches at number one singles. Lencheski is a junior who missed her sophomore year due to an injury after teaming with CoCo Chen to win a PIAA doubles title as a freshman. That was the school's first ever State Championship. Last Thursday (Sept. 7th), Southern Lehigh edged Moravian 3-2 on the Lion's courts with Barnes winning in straight sets over DeCastro. Barnes is Southern Lehigh"s star softball pitcher.
Lencheski remained unbeaten last Friday after Notre Dame and Moravian Academy faced each other for the second time this season, but the outcome much different this time around with the Lions prevailing 4-1. Lencheski had the lone win. Moravian coach Rick Brown is breaking in a totally new singles lineup. Meanwhile, Southern Lehigh, with two returnees in singles, was set to host Notre Dame September 13th but wet court conditions forced a postponement until Friday.
The tri-fecta of rematches concludes September 26th when Southern Lehigh hosts Moravian. This all could add up to more suspense than usual when the Colonial League tournament rolls around followed by the District 2A
