Every team wants to peak at the right time; and usually that time is right before the playoffs. However, for college sports, it can be argued, that the best time to start peaking is at the beginning of conference play. Sure, you don’t necessarily have to be at your best, but you want to be pretty close to it in my opinion. Because if you don’t play well in the conference, then chances are you’re not making the post season.
I was at Lehigh last night for Men’s Soccer and the team looks to be clicking on all cylinders, which has been their focus over the past few weeks. Let me put it in to perspective for you: In the teams first three games, the Mountain Hawks gave up 5 goals, while only scoring 3. They opened the season 1-2 but have now won 3 straight while only giving up 2 goals, and scoring 8 – that’s pretty impressive. So obviously, last night’s performance was another well rounded one as they defeated a Big East squad in Seton Hall 3-1. Three different players were able to get on the board off of the 7 shots on goal, while the defense did an excellent job keeping the ball from getting to their keeper, Will Smith. The Pioneers only had 3 SOG.
The win gives the Mountain Hawks a three-game win streak heading into Patriot League action. The recent success has given the team a lot of confidence said both Head Coach Dean Koski and Senior Doyle Tuvesson. They will definitely need it, but Coach wants to make sure they don’t get too ahead of themselves at the same time. Lehigh will welcome in nationally ranked Army in their first match, which is set for Saturday at 7 and they are the best squad Lehigh will have faced yet.
"Both teams will enter the matchup with appropriate confidence as we have both achieved good results as of late. We are going to face the best team in the league right now in my opinion. They are going to come in with a lot of confidence, hopefully we bring a lot of confidence too and the best team will win," said Koski.
I haven’t seen Army, but if Lehigh continues to peak and play the way they did last night, I think they have a good shot at a great season.
