Saturday Septemeber 16th, 2017 was no ordinary day for Emmaus field hockey head coach, Sue Butz-Stavin, as the legendary coach notched her 900th career win in a 2-1 overtime victory over rival, Parkland. Butz-Stavin, America's all-time winningest high school field hockey head coach and 2-time NHSCA National Coach of the year, spoke with us last night about how it felt to reach the historic milestone saying, "it's like any other game. I don't think about how many, I look at the game that's present and how we can be successful on the field with our personnel and the coaching staff does a great job in prepping the individuals for certain tactics and strategies that we want to use on the field. So it's all inclusive, you know we have a great staff, girls and the support from the parents, the booster club, my husband, along with administration, so it's an all inclusive thing. The stones were set for us to continue on the path from 1960 and we're just gonna keep trying to persevere and stay with our traditions here at Emmaus."
On Monday night, after Butz-Stavin captured number 901 with a 7-0 win over Stroudsburg, Emmaus Athletic Director Dennis Ramella said with a smile "only 99 more to go" with Butz-Stavin reiterating the remark. We asked Butz-Stavin when we could expect that one and to that she replied with a chuckle "I'm not quite sure, could be 3, could be 4, could be 5 so we'll just take one season at a time and enjoy it as it goes along."
So now a new countdown is underway as the Lady Hornets look to continue their 63 game winning streak, with each win one step closer to a new milestone!
She is 901-79-35 in 42 years as head coach at Emmaus.
Including 12 state titles and 28 consecutive District XI 3A titles.
Congratulations Coach Butz-Stavin!
