DESALES STUNS MUHLENBERG

One goal is all it would take for the Desales Field Hockey team to pull off the upset over the 16th nationally ranked Division III squad, in Muhlenberg on Wednesday night. It is the Bulldogs first win over a nationally ranked team and first win over the Mules in their third meeting.

The night was filled with back and forth action, which had the Mules offense looking to strike first. But they could not get one on the board, despite forcing the first corner of the game not even two minutes in. The Bulldogs would not be awarded their first corner for another 14 minutes; but they too could not capitalize thanks to some really stiff defense.  The teams would share 6 shots a piece in the first half, and the late surge in the half would even have the Bulldogs with 5 corners opposed to the Mules three, but the game remained scoreless into the half.

With so many shots on goal, one of the teams was bound to get on the board, or so it seemed. But it was a game of defenses in this one. Yes, the Bulldogs eventually snuck one in a little over 10 minutes into the second half, off of their second corner of the half; but that is all there would be. The Mules would even force 8 corners in the final 17 minutes but they would never even have that great of a look.

Surprisingly Muhlenberg is now 0-2 to start the young season and Desales is the one who is 2-0 defeating both locals (Moravian) in the same year for the first time. The season is obviously still very young and no one should be in a panic yet. The Mules know what they are doing, and they looked good on the field, they just couldn’t finish. They need to stay patient, it will come.
