The 165th Great Allentown Fair came to a close Tuesday night and for many families and friends, it was another great year of agriculture, art and entertainment. Along with the music, the fair provided a death defying thrill show from the Nerveless Nocks, a roping, fast-draw shooting, bull-whip cracking wild west show from America's Got Talent Season 6 Quarterfinalist Dan Mink, and even swimming pigs - yes, that's correct. Not to mention the fantastic fair food and amusement rides that are a must for all fairgoers and of course the J&J Demolition Derby to wrap things up with my son Giovanni taking it all in for the first time!
Even this morning before going back to school, he was still telling me all about the show! While this years Grandstand shows were also just as entertaining, including big acts like Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, John Melloncamp and Pentatonix, the free shows were also well attended. On Service Electric Saturday, 18-time Grammy Award Winner Jimmy Sturr and his Orchestra put on a fantastic show at the Main Gate. Polka fans young and old all turned out for the annual show- Sturrs 38th performance at the Fair, as he announced from the stage. A show that brings many familiar faces back time and time again. You couldn't help but notice what joy "tradition" brings to the many who turned out to dance, socialize, or just relax with family and friends.
The Great Allentown Fair has been around since 1852, it is one of the oldest fairs in the United States, and one of the largest in the state of Pennsylvania. If you've never attended the fair, Here are just a few images from the night. I hope they inspire you to have fun, rekindle old friendships, and get you thinking about next year!
