The Easton Red Rovers girl's tennis team came into the 2017 season with high expectations, after a successful 2016 year, that saw them capture the District XI team championship. But in the late summer, Head coach Joe Rossi was informed that the defending District XI 3A doubles champions, Sophie and Ireland Amato, would not be returning to Easton this year.
With that, the transition got underway and the Red Rovers revamped their lineup. At number one, Elessa Jacobs remained, but from there the lineup changed. Junior Kaitlin Grogg moved from number two doubles to number two singles while Sophomore Hiu Ying Kwok moved from number three doubles to number three singles. And the rest is history.
Joe Rossi watched as Jacobs and Kwok went perfect through the regular season while Grogg posted a 13-2 mark. Easton, who last year finished runner up in the league to Bethlehem Catholic went undefeated this year en route to the East Penn Conference regular season title going 15-0.
Also, Jacobs defeated Becahi’s Brenna Magliochetti to capture the league title at number one singles, while Kwok won the title at number three singles with Grogg finishing runner up at number two singles.
Rossi said, “ The girls knew they would be compared to last season, but they were here to establish their own legacy. They are close knit group and continue to get better as the season moves forward.”
Easton is hoping for more titles down the road and next up will be the District XI singles tournament which gets underway on Monday at Lehigh University, where Jacobs is hoping to defend her title.
Hats off to Coach Rossi and the entire Easton tennis team for coming together and showing everyone what a team is all about.
