The fact that the Lehigh football team struggled to get past a rebuilding Lafayette team, with a first year head coach may be a bit of a surprise to some. To others it probably was expected. A rivalry game is always going to get the best of the underdog and the Leopards capitalized early in the first half off of the Mountain Hawks mistakes giving them the 24-14 lead heading into the locker rooms. However, second half changes saw Lehigh bounce back with three TDs and a defense that allowed just 24 yards on its way to a 38-31 win. The win marks three in a row over Lafayette and awarded Lehigh with its 12th
Patriot League (2nd
straight) title. The team compared the game to be much like their season; where the Mountain Hawks started the year 0-5, and went on to win 5 of their final 6.
The victory also clinched the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. It would be a day later the team would find out their fate. The Mountain Hawks will visit #10 Stony Brook in the first round of the FCS Playoffs on Saturday, where game time will be at 2pm.
Head Coach, Andy Coen, was quoted by the school saying: "We're very excited to be getting a CAA team." "We always like to play against those guys. We have a slightly easier road trip than some previous years. We would've gone anywhere. I'm so happy we have this opportunity because our guys have worked so hard to achieve this. They're going to be excited. We're going to have great practices and put our best foot forward here."
**Stony Brook finished their season 9-2. The two have faced off once before back in 2004, in Lehigh's season opener that saw Lehigh win. The winner will face the No. 1 seed and defending National Champion, James Madison.
