The Lafayette softball team has not had a winning Patriot League season since 2007-2008. In fact, they’ve only had 13 combined wins over the past four years in conference play. So for you and I, it’s not really surprising that the Leopards were in search of a new head coach. Is it?? Well, according to the Director of Athletics, Bruce McCutcheon, it is. Jexx Varner, who spent the last four seasons as the Lafayette head coach, supposedly resigned earlier this summer in order to pursue other professional opportunities. Varner racked up 40 wins over his four years. After his announcement, Lafayette began their search for a new head coach, and it was announced a little over a week ago that the lucky candidate is Caitlyn De La Haba.
De La Haba, comes from George Mason where she spent the last two years as an assistant coach, primarily working with the pitchers. Although, De La Haba has never been a head coach, she believes she is more than ready for the opportunity. Despite being from Virginia, she has been involved with the Patriot League before. She spent time with rival Lehigh back in 2012-2014. De La Haba attended Villanova University from 2008-2012, where she left her mark on the field.
Here’s hoping she can turn around the Lafayette softball program!
